Welcome to Academics

At Avalon University School of Medicine, our goal is to ensure capable high school and college graduates are successful in all of their medical career endeavors. AUSOM's faculty members provide a unique and modern medical education, which is patterned after a U.S. Medical School curriculum. AUSOM's philosophy is based on quality instruction and small class sizes. AUSOM provides a comprehensive understanding of medicine in both our Pre-Med and M.D. programs and focuses on successful placement in residency programs leading to U.S. medical licensure.

Faculty members at AUSOM are experienced physicians, who are well versed in basic science and clinical medicine instruction. They possess a gross understanding of how to succeed on the USMLE and have an intimate knowledge of the U.S. residency matching process.

Pre-Med

AUSOM offers a 4 semester Pre-Med program available to high school graduates interested in continuing on to medical school. This focused curriculum includes basic undergraduate coursework in reading, writing and math with a strong emphasis on scientific foundations. Students who complete our Pre-Med coursework automatically advance into the 4-year M.D. program at AUSOM. This track allows students entering immediately after high school the opportunity to begin residency by age 23.

M.D. Program

AUSOM is well known for its intensive and accelerated Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) program. AUSOM's medical program is geared to prepare students for the USMLE and U.S. residency placement. AUSOM's trimester schedule enables us to condense the traditional 4-year Medical School curriculum, while still maintaining the prerequisite amount of program contact hours. AUSOM'S students spend 4 semesters in the basic sciences followed by 72 weeks in the Clinical Sciences Program. These 72 weeks of training include 48 weeks in required clinical rotations (or clerkships) and 24 weeks of elective rotations in U.S. teaching hospitals. Required rotations include Internal Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Family Medicine, Psychiatry and Obstetrics/Gynecology. Some elective rotations include Cardiology, Radiology, Pulmonology, Hematology/Oncology, Orthopedics, Otolaryngology, Gastroenterology, Neurology and Dermatology. This exposure allows students to choose which field of medicine they wish to pursue.
