Pathology -2

Course: Pathology II/ Systemic Pathology
Code: MED 8750

Description and Objective of the Course:

Systemic pathology deals with diseases affecting different systems of human body individually and elaboratedly. Clinical scenario of the case is correlated with pathological findings. Students will be taught and encouraged to apply the knowledge of their physiology to understand the pathophysiology of the disease.students are encouraged to the apply the knowledge of biochemistry, microbiology and general pathology about the disease causation and defence mechanism.

To have a thorough knowledge on different diseases and their pathological picture of the disease. To understand the different stages and severity of the disease both clincally and pathologically to apply their prior knowledge where to intervene in the disease process.

• By the end of the course of systemic pathology each student :
• By looking at the clinical picture what kind of disease he is dealing with.
• The kind of approach he should have towards the course of the disease.
• Able to evaluate the normal and abnormal laboratiory findings and interprete them including radiological findings.
• Have knowledge about the progression of disease with and without intervention.
• Understand the importance of pathology as a course and to integrate the same with other courses

Pharmacology

Course: Pharmacology
Code: MED 8763

Objective of the Course:

• To make the student understand the mechanism of action, site of action, Routes of administration of drug, effects, adverse effects, drug interactions, metabolism and excretion of drug;
• To make student understand what body does to the drug and what drug does to the body;
• To make student understand how & why to select particular drug in given case;
• To provide adequate knowledge of non pharmacological line of management;
• To make student aware of recent advances in the therapeutics.
• To integrate the concepts of Physiology ,Biochemistry and Pathology in understanding Pharmacology
• The location of the pharmacology course during the last semester of the basic sciences on the island is designed for development of an integrative understanding of drug interactions with complex physiological and pathological processes. Thus, the course both integrates prior basic science instruction, and illustrates practical applications of such knowledge for the physician. In addition, when possible, efforts are made to coordinate pharmacology lectures with the second half of the pathology.
• Students will come to know by the end of semester that Medical Pharmacology provides a novel integrative review of broad areas of conceptual and factual knowledge relating to physiology, biochemistry, microbiology and pathology
• Moreover, the timing and integrative nature of pharmacology should provide incredible benefits in terms of preparation for USMLE Step 1 which follows shortly after completion of the course.

Physical Diagnosis

Course: Physical Diagnosis
Code: MED 8762

Objective of the Course:

The objective of this course is to familiarize the medical students with the basic concepts, principles and skills that they must possess to prepare them for the clinical rotation, when they need to perform physical examination on their patients.

This course also prepares the students very well for Step 2cs exam with very good physical examination skills, communication skills and counseling the patients.

This is one course where students enjoy integrating all the courses they have learned from MD1 to Md4. We do review all courses beginning from Anatomy and embryology to Pathology and pharmacology during our discussions about history of present illness and differential diagnosis.

Students also learn schematic approach regarding differential diagnosis and Investigations to rule out different things in differential diagnosis and arrive to final diagnosis.

This course is also valuable for the students to answer some of the questions on USMLE step 1 exam especially questions which are integrated with physical findings and clinical symptoms.

Introduction to Clinical Medicine

Course: Introduction to Medicine I
Code: CBS 9841A

Objective of the Course:

The objective of the course is to make the students familiarize with the basic knowledge of clinical diseases of medicine and their presentation to the hospital and also the clinical presentation of acute cases and briefs how to act in emergency situations.

By the end of semester students will be familiarized with etiology, common clinical presentation to the hospital, investigations required and management of common clinical cases like Hypertension, Caronary artery diseases, Valvular heart diseases, Arrhythmias, Asthma, COPD, Pulmonary embolism, Pneumonias, Cirrhosis, Acute abdomen, Pancreatitis and Cerebrovascular accidents.

This is one course where students enjoy integrating all the courses they have learned from MD1 to MD4 especially pathophysiology cases. These pathophysiology cases will be correlated with Pathology II lectures. We do review courses Pathology and pharmacology during our discussions regarding each clinical case.

Students learn about schematic approach regarding differential diagnosis and Investigations to rule out different things in differential diagnosis and arrive to final diagnosis. Students also learn management of emergency situations and acute clinical cases.

Evidence Based Medicine and Journal club

Participation of students in EBM is also part of this course. Students learn critical thinking and analyzing the research work. Students will pick up any article of clinical trial or other research work and present them for the whole school. All students and professors will attend for the presentation. It is very interactive discussion and everybody participates in it.
