Course: Pathology -1
Code: MED 7650
Objective of the Course:
This course mainly emphasizes on the basics of the cell function and responses to various stimuli; cell injury and cell death; Inflammation; Wound repair and healing; hemodynamics, thrombosis, embolism; genetic disorders; neoplasia; immunopathology; environmental and nutritional disorders; diseases of infancy and childhood; hematological disorders to include red blood cells, white blood cells, bone marrow, lymph nodes and the spleen. By the end of semester students will be familiar with the concepts of general pathology, knowledge of the same is applied in Evidence based medicine and clinical research. During the course students will be tested in all the concepts and are prepared for Licensure examinations. Pathology lab mainly helps the students to identify abnormal morphological & histological changes in different conditions comparing with normal histology.
Course: Genetics
Code: MED 8711
Objective of the Course:
The course mainly emphasize on the role of genes in inheritance, pathogenesis, diagnosis, counseling, treatment. The principles of genetics and mechanisms of genetic disorders help the students in applying these concepts in clinical settings and also in research. Course explains about the structure of DNA, DNA replication and repair, genetic code , mutations and translation, genetic regulation, identifying inherited and non-inherited traits, population genetics, recombinant DNA, techniques of Genetic analysis, cytogenetics, single gene disorders, gene mapping. Students will be tested after completion of each topic and are trained for licensure examination.
Course: Behavioral Sciences and Medical Ethics
Code: MED 7633
Objective of the Course:
This course explains about different emotions by pregnant women; behavioral changes, milestones at different ages till death; Concepts of learning theory; defense mechanisms; evaluation of a patient, normal sleep and sleep disorders, drug abuse, sexual disorders, psychopathology, Patient -physician relationship; social behavior; clinical ethics. Students will be trained to communicate with patients effectively emphasizing on physician's role and ethical issues. This course is designed to develop the knowledge and insights required for a practicing physician's understanding of the patient's emotional responses to illness and stress. Students will be tested at different levels and are prepared for Licensure exams.
Course: Medical Microbiology & Immunology
Code: MED 7684A/B
Objective of the Course:
Microbiology & Immunology, In this course the characteristics and properties of various micro-organisms, their role in the pathogenesis of disease, aspects of diagnosis and treatment of various infectious diseases and their role in causing epidemics, pandemics will be discussed. The course starts with explaining about important features of bacteria, structure of bacteria, cultural and staining techniques, pathogenic properties of bacteria . Other organisms like Virus, fungi, parasitological will be discussed in detail. A special focus is given on oncogenic viruses and their pathogenesis, Life cycle of parasites. Simultaneously with microbiology, immune response to various micro-organisms and antigens will be discussed in immunology. This is an introductory program that covers the basic immunologic concepts of the cellular and humoral response of the immune system. Lectures include the development of immune cells, molecular biology and genetics of antigen recognition and immunoglobulin production and the antigen-antibody reactions. This will correlate with the human immune response to various antigens. These basic concepts with clinical manifestations of disease, the immunopathologic mechanisms of exaggerated immune response to stimuli like hypersensitivity reactions, self destruction mechanisms in autoimmunity, transplantation, tumor immunology, hematology, reproduction, infectious diseases and immunodefiency will be discussed in detail. These concepts helps the students to integrate them in Pathology, Pharmacology. Students will be tested at different levels and are prepared or Licensure Examinations.
